With over 25 years in the same industry, Mark Zachary could be forgiven if he started feeling career burnout. But he’s not there yet. In fact, he’s managed to keep things fresh—some of it by design and some of it as a by-product of the business. 

“If you’ve been out of the mortgage business more than 3 or 4 years it’s like you’ve never been in it because it’s changed so much, says Zachary. “In reality, I’ve probably created a whole new career for myself because it’s always changing.”

Mortgage Mom Radio: How mortgage vet Debbie Marcoux branded herself & thrived

The business of home ownership is in Debbie Marcoux’s blood. As a teenager she worked for her real estate agent parents, answering phones and handing out flyers. When she was 17, she passed the real estate exam in California, but by law, had to wait until she was 18 before the state would issue her a license.

By 2001, she had her first child, and wanting more family-conducive hours, pivoted from selling houses to selling mortgages, again following in the footsteps of her parents who had made the switch. Though it wasn’t a big stretch to go from homes to mortgages, she still had a lot to learn.

“You fumble around for a little while until you figure out what you’re doing, what your strategy is, and where you want to go,” Marcoux says.
